A common condition among older Australians who suffer from erectile dysfunction is also common among their new-onset, non-hospitalised patients. This study aimed to compare the effects of the combination of the two drugs at once, and to determine if the treatment was better than other options.

METHODS

Study design and participants

This study included all new-onset, non-hospitalised patients diagnosed by the Australian Society for Erectile Dysfunction (ASED) with a diagnosis of erectile dysfunction who were admitted to the hospital for the treatment of ED. This study was approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the University of Sydney, Australia. Patients were eligible to participate if they were aged between 50 and 70 years with the diagnosis of erectile dysfunction according to the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) scale and had a diagnosis of ED at discharge from the hospital.

Patients were included if they had at least two of the following:

  • ED at least 1 hour prior to discharge
  • ED of at least 2 months before discharge
  • ED of at least 6 months before discharge
  • ED of at least 1 month before discharge
  • PE of at least 6 months before discharge.

The study was conducted at the Department of Sexual Medicine and Reproductive Health, University of Sydney, Australia.

Eligibility and recruitment

The inclusion and exclusion criteria were:

  • Any history of substance abuse;
  • History of substance abuse;
  • History of ED at admission from a general practitioner, dentist, nurse or other specialist.

Intervention

The treatment of ED in this study was a combination of the two drugs, which were both taken in the form of tablets and oral suspension. The drug was taken once daily for 10 consecutive days, and the study drug was taken twice daily for 5 consecutive days. The tablets and oral suspension were swallowed as a tablet, and the solution was dissolved in water. Patients were advised to start taking the tablets with water immediately before breakfast and take them for 2 to 3 hours before breakfast. Patients were advised to take the tablets at least 2 hours after the start of the treatment.

Patients were also told that they would not be able to take the tablets if they had been given their previous medical history and would be given the tablets only at night.

Outcome measures

The primary outcome was the occurrence of ED. The secondary outcome was the occurrence of ED at discharge for the following reasons:

  • Allergic reactions to the drugs or to any of the other medications being taken

The treatment of ED was divided into two parts, which were treated by the drug for a period of one day, followed by a period of six months. The treatment was given in the same way as the other three treatment groups.

    The treatment of ED was a combination of the two drugs and was given at least three times a day.
